Short History
The history of the N.P.C begins with the late Reverend George McGregor. It was in February 1956 that God spoke to George McGregor. In a dream he was told to read Mathew 15 from verse 7 to 9..... " Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, this people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men..."
After the night of having a confrontation with God, George McGregor was never the same again. His house was changed from that day onwards. In 1959 God called George McGregor into the full-time ministry and commissioned him to go and preach this gospel throughout the nation. He was at first unwilling to go but after a gruesome car accident he found himself at home for three months without any income and God proving to him that He is enough for all his needs. Out of the evangelistic meetings churches were established in many cities.
These churches were usually given over to the pastors that were already active in the areas. In 1973 God placed on his heart to start the National Pentecostal Church. The oldest branch of the NPC was founded in Port Elizabeth in 1975 after a great revival in that city. In 1976 the McGregor family found themselves in the Transvaal and had some powerful revivals in and around what is now Gauteng and the Northern Province. In June 1976 the McGregors were back in Soweto, Orlando East. The day riots broke out they had to hurriedly take the tent tabernacle down amidst the police forces and tear gas cannisters.
The first branch of the NPC in Gauteng was started in Natalspruit in 1977. After spending at least four months in Natalspruit the McGregor's moved to Kwa-Thema. At this time Reverend Owen McGregor was married and Natalspruit and Kwa-Thema gave him a wedding reception all over again. In those early years the congregation would assemble together on Sundays at the site where revivals were held. The NPC had revivals at least 365 days a year. As the unrest in the country escalated the McGregors found premises in town, first in Mayfair and then they moved the church services to the Johannesburg Town Hall. From the Mayfair days the NPC started to consolidate. The emphasis moving away from intensive Evangelizing and more to establish the believers.
The greatest crisis The National Pentecostal Church experienced was when Reverend George McGregor, (Father McGregor as everybody called him), passed away in October 1985. Shortly after this Pastor Owen McGregor became very sick with cancer of the kidney. After the death of Father McGregor, and also the sickness of Pastor Owen, the church was really in the pit of despair. But as always God proved Himself as the God who is in control of all circumstances and situations. After the Call to Glory of Father McGregor the National Pentecostal Church came under the leadership of Pastor Owen. Premises was immediately acquired in the center of town, in Loveday Street. From Loveday Street we moved to the Movie House in Checkers Centre, Hillbrow. Then in 1990 the Lord gave us the place where we find the NPC today. During the first church service on the premises we prayed that the Lord must make this place a Lighthouse in South Africa and throughout all of Africa. Many ministers have come through the NPC Tent Tabernacle and have confirmed what the church prayed for in December of 1990.
